There are many different ways to channel your intuition for guidance and wisdom, and one popular technique is through the use of rune stones.
Runes are composed of an ancient alphabet from Germanic lands and tribes that once roamed the continent in Europe. Although there are several runic alphabets, the oldest and most common is the Elder Futhark, which uses 24 different symbols divided into three groups of eight runes each.
The various runic alphabets have long fallen out of mainstream use, but they remain a significant part of magical circles in the practice of divination.
Runestones have been used for divination for millennia, with archaeologists unearthing a number of these stones from the Bronze Age. In each set of runestones, a single symbol is etched onto each stone, which is then laid out in various spreads to answer questions about the past, present, and future.
Different types of rune stones
Each rune has three different meanings: a phonetic sound, an image of an object or action, and an esoteric meaning used in divination. When using runes for divination it is important to be well acquainted with all three and also to be familiar with Germanic mythology as this is where the practice originated.
Although the world of runes uses a different language, don’t be put off if you’re a complete beginner. Anyone can learn to read, understand and cast runes, especially when you are in touch with your intuitive and spiritual side.
It’s fairly easy these days to acquire your own set of runestones and practice casting at home. The most common runestone materials are wood and glass, but bone, antler, pottery, gemstones, and even regular stones are also used.
One material is not particularly better than the other as each reader tends to choose their runes based on personal preference or budget. Trust your intuition and choose a set that you feel a strong connection with.
Some psychics even prefer to create their own from scratch so that their personal runestone set is imbued with their own energy.
It can take many years to truly master this divination practice, but even a beginner can pick up the basics quickly. Runestone readings are often used to help people with a problem or question they need help with.
The traditional method of using runestones is to pour the stones onto a white cloth in the direction of the east-west axis or the sun. The way the rune stones fall matters: the stones that are right side up are read one way, while the stones that are upside down are read another way.
However, if you are just beginning your practice, the daily single rune reading or the three rune reading may be better for you.
Reading runestones daily
This “spread” is ideal for daily reading or single questions that don’t require a lot of detail. The daily reading is somewhat similar to looking up a daily horoscope in the morning. It’s quick, simple, and easy, especially if you’re just starting out with runestones.
With practice, you will get used to reading the different runes and applying their different meanings to your life.
The first step, as with any divination practice, is to clear your mind and relax by focusing on your breathing for a few minutes. When you have an established connection with your spirit guides, you will also want to seek their guidance and blessings on the reading.
Then put all your rune stones in a bag and mix them up with your sensitive hand that is more sensitive to magical energy. Your receptive hand is usually the opposite hand that you use for writing or other manual activities.
After shuffling the stones in the bag, ask your question and choose a single rune stone from the collection. That single stone should provide an answer to your question, but if you find it’s unclear or you need a little more clarification, just grab another stone from the bag.
If the answer still feels vague or unsatisfactory, before trying again, shuffle your runestones and choose another from the set.
The three rune spread
The three rune spread is a bit more complicated than reading a single rune, but it’s ideal if you’re looking for more comprehensive answers to your question or problem. As the name suggests, this spread uses three rune stones representing the past, the present and the future.
The past stone informs you of the people, events, and other factors related to your question, while the present provides clarity about the life path you are on. Finally, the future stone tells you where the path you are on leads to.
Another three rune spread that is also quite common is to draw one stone for an outline of your problem or condition, another for challenges you are currently facing and the third for possible solutions, that you could try.
As you become more familiar with the different runes and their meanings, you will develop a deeper relationship with the stones, making it easier to apply their meanings to your life. Although tarot cards are more common, you will find that rune stones are much easier to learn as each stone only has a single meaning to analyze, unlike a tarot card which is packed with symbolism and potential meanings.
In any mediumistic practice, it is important not only to learn the basics of the practice, but also to learn how to use the tools that connect one to the spiritual world. Cleaning and recharging your runestones is essential after each use.
There are several ways to clean your stones, one of which is to simply bathe them in sunlight or moonlight for 24 hours. Incense is also a well-known method of cleansing and purifying psychic tools, in which the stones are fumigated with herbs such as sage or lavender.
The rune stones can also be washed with running water from a natural water source such as a spring, river or stream. Remember to always use natural water and never tap water to wash your stones.
