Humans and animals have a different kind of soul consciousness. Because of these two different types of consciousness, it is impossible to be reborn in any other form.
People who believe in reincarnation often face a blank slate when confronted with the question of whether they can be reincarnated as animals and conversely, whether animals can be reincarnated as humans.
This is a huge controversy that has divided religions and thinkers for ages. Those who argue that humans can become dogs or cats in their next life, or that birds and bees can take human forms in their next life, base their belief on their claim that all creatures in this world were created by God and that the Both of Earth’s major classifications of living things—humans and animals—have shown different levels of consciousness, intelligence, and emotions.
Some even argue that humans and animals are actually the same—whereas humans are simply a higher form of animal or have evolved over thousands of years. Because reincarnation believers know that both humans and animals have souls, some believe that if they reincarnate, they may transcend the barriers of their classification.
Their reasoning may seem persuasive, especially when they cite examples of animals behaving like humans. Research has documented evidence that some animals show human-like emotions, such as dolphins and whales expressing joy and gratitude, pigs and cows getting scared, monkeys showing compassion and embarrassment, and elephants expressing both cheering and sadness demonstrate.
Does an animal have a soul?
Most people, regardless of their religion, believe that every human being has a soul. They differ on whether an animal also has a soul.
Reincarnation religions profess that animals also have souls. Hindus believe that a person can be reborn as either a human or an animal. They believe that all people and animals have souls and live forever.
Buddhists also believe that humans and animals have souls. However, they claim that after death, all souls return to the universe and cease to be individuals.
Christians, Jews and Muslims believe in a soul that is born into a human body only once. However, they have unclear views on the possibility of animals having souls. They don’t believe in reincarnation of any kind.
However, there are some Catholics who believe that animals have a “temporary” soul, but only if they are still alive, with the soul disappearing after death. Indeed, in 1990, Pope John Paul II publicly declared that animals, like humans, have received from God the “breath of life” and that they “possess a soul.”
Reincarnation cannot cross the human-animal barrier
One thing is clear: none of the world’s religions have concrete evidence that animals do or don’t have souls. Regarding reincarnation, be it human or animal, it is more based on the ancient beliefs of some religions.
I believe in human reincarnation based on the universal belief that a soul never dies. And I also believe, no, I know that animals also have souls.
However, I have to say “no” to the idea that humans can be reincarnated as animals. The reason for this is very clear: humans and animals have different soul consciousnesses. You cannot be a dog in your past life or a cat in your future life. It is simply impossible for a human being to be reborn as an animal, because one species cannot become another species, because humans and animals have completely different consciousnesses.
Think of the two reasons why a human soul is reborn multiple times. The first is that a soul is reborn because it still has lessons to learn in the process of its spiritual evolution. So you keep reincarnating, learning new lessons along the way, until you reach the state of spiritual perfection.
What lessons could you learn if you are reincarnated as an animal? That’s just incomprehensible.
The second reason is that after your physical death you are reborn because you still have karmic debts that need to be settled. Karmic debt refers to the effects of your thoughts, actions, desires, and intentions in your current life that need to be accounted for or balanced in your next life.
In short, you reap what you sow. So how could you balance your karma if you were reincarnated as an animal? It’s just out of this world!
The connection between reincarnation and karma
Let’s remember that reincarnation and karma are connected. Your current karma determines the personality and experiences you will have in your future lives. In the same way, your past life karma is manifesting in your present life in the way you live, the things you achieve and fail to achieve, and the problems you are currently facing.
In short, your current life is the “effect” of your past life karma.
This means that everything you think or do now will determine the experiences you will have in your future lives.
It should be noted that once your soul has learned a karmic lesson, that lesson will never be repeated in your future incarnations.
However, some reincarnation believers claim that a person with bad karma could reincarnate as an animal as a form of punishment for their bad behavior in their past lives. I ask you to disagree. Humans cannot easily cross the barriers of their species during reincarnation.
Being reborn in a new life is already a manifestation of the karmic effect, which can be either good or bad. You are reborn as a unique individual because of the effects of your past actions in your past lives. You will continue to be born again and again, improving with every step along the way until your soul reaches its highest spiritual state.
Remember: you reap what you sow
Even if you are never reincarnated as a cockroach or a flea, it does not mean that you will escape punishment if you misbehave in your current life.
Whatever you do today will affect your next life. If you do bad things today, expect that you will experience their negative effects not only in your next life but even in your present life.
The overriding lesson karma and reincarnation teach us is that we should always be mindful of our thoughts and actions. By showing love, kindness, and compassion to others, you can expect a much more beautiful and rewarding life now and in your next reincarnation.
