What is karma?
Put simply, karma is the idea that what you give is what you get – that what you do comes back to you. Karma means “action” in Sanskrit. It represents the spiritual cycle of cause and effect. The concept of karma is an important part of Buddhism and Hinduism as they believe that a person’s karma plays an important role in how their next life unfolds.
The difference between good and bad karma
Good karma is not necessarily about giving people material things. Giving your time and energy to those around you is just as (if not more) important. Helping someone with a chore, saying a happy word to someone, or simply listening to a person in need are all actions that count. In fact, making others feel seen and heard by validating, appreciating, and encouraging them can be an invaluable gift.
While donating money to help other people and make sure they are happy can be a great way to give to others, remember that the most important thing when it comes to karma is the intention behind every action . You can’t buy really good karma. Acting from the heart is the best way to receive karmic rewards and there are so many different ways to give.
The law of karma states that whatever you do will affect you later, even if you don’t ask for it. It may return in a different form or situation, and it may affect different people, but the energy will be the same. When your actions are positive and loving, karma will return that light to you in myriad ways. You can meet kind, generous and loving people or receive things you need – possibly including money as life seems to smile back at you.
But remember that the reverse is also true. Deliberately doing things that are selfish or harmful to other people creates bad karma. This negative energy will come back to you, perhaps through difficult, challenging, and/or painful experiences. Alternatively, you might encounter someone else doing to you what you used to do to others, causing you to experience the same hurtful, mean, or spiteful energy that you sent out before.
Generosity and good karma in your life
Does it feel good to help others? Does it warm your heart and delight your soul when you see another person smile with delight at something you have given them? This is how giving can become good karma in your life.
Doing what you know is right creates good karma that can benefit you in the long run. You do this by helping others and keeping them in mind when making decisions. That doesn’t mean everything you do has to be for the sake of other people, but it’s a good idea to avoid harm whenever possible and always consider how your decisions will affect those around you . When you do this, the people in your life usually want to give all the good back to you right away, and the universe itself begins to work in your favor.
This can have a positive effect on almost all areas of life. Here are some areas where good karma can play a particularly powerful role.
There are many ways that good karma can benefit your career. In this example, let’s say you have a co-worker whom you have treated with respect and appreciation, and you help them whenever possible without expecting any reward. One day you may unexpectedly rise to a higher position with more authority. They will surely remember how you treated them and how you made them feel. If you’ve been rude, they’ll know you’re not a cooperative employee and will treat you accordingly. However, if you have been compassionate, they will step into their new role with the understanding that you are a team player who lifts those around you up.
If you give your significant other the same attention and care that you desire, they will likely emulate your example and be more open than if you ignored them. If you treat your lover as well as possible, show him tenderness, compassion and kindness, while being affectionate and faithful at the same time, a good partner will immediately return this devotion. If your feelings and thoughts about your lover are loving and positive, he will feel that energy and ideally reciprocate. If you put your positive thinking into action, you will eventually find a partner who is a good match for you and together you can form a strong connection with lots of good karma.
Being loving to your family, supporting them and giving everything you do with them strengthens your bonds with each other and creates good karma. Staying by their side in good times and bad, cheering them up when they’re down, and being a rock for them when they need it can help you build happier, healthier relationships.
In return, you will find that your family is certainly there for you too if you need them. This mutual support system can bring a sense of security, comfort, and security to both you and your family. Most importantly, you all feel genuinely loved. Of course, it’s important to note that it’s not necessarily about the biological family – it’s more about the people who will return you kindness and appreciate you for who you are. Family good karma is about your chosen family and whether there is any overlap with your biological relationships is entirely up to you.
Get rid of bad karma
Fortunately, if you want to get rid of bad karma that you fear has been accumulated, the solution is fairly simple. The Bhagavad Gita teaches that self-knowledge reduces karma to nothing. Follow your intuition, practice meditation and give to others – but do it with pure intention. Going through life with self-reflection and genuine compassion can help you overcome bad karma that you previously earned.
Create good karma by giving
To paraphrase the Dalai Lama, a simple smile is the first step to opening your heart and being compassionate towards others. Who needs your smile today? Look for someone who could benefit from the gift of kindness right now. The world needs you to be your loving self every day, so go out and give from your heart. As you do this, you can watch your good karma unfold in surprisingly beneficial ways.
