Whether it is accidental, chronic, or a reaction to trauma, everyone struggles with anxiety at some point in their lives. However, this status quo is not sustainable for the reasons given above. Then, of course, there is the question of how to overcome fear in order to live a happier life.

Different types of fear

Some fears are simply innate, such as the fear of the dark, spiders, or lightning. Others are conditioned and come from experience – like going to the dentist, getting an injection, or being stung by a bee. In these situations, you have been trained or conditioned to respond to specific stimuli. Some of these are manageable.

However, the type of anxiety in question here is either the result of something that has already happened and you don’t want to experience it again, or something that could theoretically happen and you are so concerned that it stops you from moving on. When it becomes limiting and affecting your life, it becomes important to overcome fear for your own happiness.

How to overcome fear

Whether you fear something you’ve already experienced or something that hasn’t happened yet but could happen, know that it’s holding you back from a happier life for no real reason! It’s an obstacle, but you can overcome the fear and remove this obstacle with the right tools.

Get out of your head

The first big step to overcoming fear is to get out of your head. To do this, try to distance yourself from what you are experiencing. Read the following statement and fill in the blank:

“When [blank] happens, I feel my old fear coming up.”

For example, “Whenever I go on a date, I can feel my old anxiety coming up.” Now you know where it’s coming from and can figure out why you feel this way. For example, if you are afraid of dating, you may remember the end of a previous relationship or another emotionally difficult time. The solution is to prepare a positive affirmation that will help you overcome fear and retrain your mind. An example of such an affirmation is:

“When [blank] happens I will remember that I am strong and safe and I can protect myself! I am confident and will take a deep breath, hold my head up and move forward!”

Another way to distance yourself when trying to overcome fear is to seek an outside perspective. You can talk to family and friends for support, and if your anxiety is really debilitating, be sure to see a mental health professional. If you are spiritual in any way, reaching out to a spiritual teacher or medium can also offer helpful perspective.

Retrain your brain

Take your fears and use positive affirmations to start retraining your brain. Write down your positive statement about each fear, and then place it in a place where you can see it. Alternatively, you can keep them in a place like your wallet or phone so you can read them at any time. You can also say them out loud every time your thoughts start going to that negative place. While this alone may not allow you to overcome your fear, it will help you adjust your thought patterns as you continue to work on yourself.

You control your mind

The more you use your positive affirmations, the easier things will become. However, you must be vigilant and know that you (and only you) are in control of your mind. Try to stay in control of where your mind is going and direct it back up toward the light when you feel yourself slipping backwards.

Don’t get frustrated or discouraged when you make mistakes or when progress is slow. It takes time, continuous effort and support. Remember, you can live a happier life and overcome your fear when you understand what’s holding you back. Take action, work on yourself and seek help when you need it. If you do this, you can have confidence that you will be able to overcome fear and learn to laugh and love again!
