Acceptable summer rituals
Often people feel left out of the more practical end of spirituality – the art of “doing,” so to speak. Rituals can look complicated from the outside. They often include tools and accessories, whether it’s audio for meditation, herbs for tonics, candles for prayer, or crystals! It can seem like a deep pool at times, and the thought of jumping in can be especially intimidating if you’re new to swimming.
This week let’s look at some very simple rituals you can incorporate into your daily life to improve your mindfulness, reconnect with your body, and regulate your emotional responses.
Remember: the first step in any type of manifestation is intention. If you’re looking for something, let the universe know.
Saturday 16 July
“The spirit can go in a thousand directions, but on this beautiful path I walk in peace. The wind blows with every step. With every step a flower blooms.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh
Sometimes the best way to clear your mind is to move your body. Something as simple as taking a walk outside can do wonders for your mind and emotional state. When people have something that grounds them to earth, like the feel of their feet on the pavement, the wind on their face, or the sun on their skin, it becomes easier to let go of stress and live in the moment instead.
Sunday 17 July
“All my problems will be washed away in the water”
-Unknown
water is spiritual. It surrounds us, it is within us and we are born of it. From baptisms to ritual baths, people around the world find strength and healing in water. Luckily, you don’t need holy water or an elaborate ritual to feel the influence of this element. It is enough if you just ground yourself and consciously think about flushing away certain feelings, attachments or unwanted energies. Swimming in nature can also be a powerful experience. So when you head to the lake or beach this summer, take a few moments to enjoy a water ritual.
Monday 18 July
“Beautify your inner dialogue. Embellish your inner world with love, light and compassion. Life will be beautiful.”
-Amit Ray
Even small changes in the way you talk to yourself can have a big impact. When you start practicing intentional affirmations like “I’m beautiful, I’m valuable, I’m important,” it can feel a bit odd. When you meet this natural resistance, go ahead and push through it. It’s important that you don’t give up on this step. Instead, look at the spots where you’re stuck and change your inner dialogue. Ask why not?” instead of closing the book entirely. Remind yourself that you can do difficult things, be flexible, and adapt.
Tuesday 19 July
“You are a cosmic flower. Om chanting is the process of opening the psychic petals of this flower.”
-Amit Ray
Singing is a great way to calm down and connect with your body and mind. The act of singing stimulates the vagus nerve, the largest nerve in the body that extends down from the top of the spine. This nerve is the longest in the autonomic nervous system and it is the nerve that allows your brain, lungs, heart and other vital organs to communicate. Singing or humming stimulates this nerve and helps you regulate your breathing, heart rate, and circulation, among other things.
Wednesday July 20th
“Music brings a warm glow to my vision, thawing mind and muscle from its endless hibernation.”
-Haruki Murakami
Similar to singing, singing also stimulates the vagus nerve. If singing is too embarrassing or uncomfortable for you, or it feels like an exercise that needs a whole new time slot, consider listening to some of your favorite songs and singing along as loud as possible.
Thursday 21st July
“Mindfulness practice means making a full commitment to being present in every moment; We invite ourselves to interact with this moment in full awareness, with the intent to embody as best we can an alignment of stillness, mindfulness, and equanimity here and now.”
– Jon Kabat-Zinn
Mindfulness means focusing on your body, your feelings, and your surroundings. Even simple grounding techniques like deep breathing, touching the ground with your bare feet, or narrating sensations as you experience them can help you enter a state of calm that allows you to manage stress in the present moment.
Friday 22 July
“Meditation is the dissolution of thought in Eternal Consciousness or Pure Consciousness without objectification, knowledge without thought, merging of finitude with infinity.”
-Voltaire
Meditation is a great way to set an intention and envision a way forward. Often people think that in order to meditate they need to clear their mind completely. However, some people like to meditate by focusing on one thought or one possibility – be it healing, growth or self-discovery. Meditation is a great way for you to spend time on your goals and reflect on where your hard work can take you.
